ABSENTEE VOTING INFORMATION

Why would someone vote an absentee ballot?

There are six reasons a person may vote an absentee ballot:

  1. Absence on election day from Audrain County;
  2. Incapacity or confinement due to illness or physical disability;
  3. Religious belief or practice;
  4. Employment as an election authority or by an election authority at a location other than their polling place;
  5. Incarceration, although they have retained all of the necessary qualifications for voting;
  6. Permanent disability.

How do I apply for an absentee ballot to be mailed?

The request must be in writing. The voter must reapply for a new ballot before each election.

Written requests must be received in the County Clerk’s Office no later than 5:00 p.m. the Wednesday before any election. Your letter should contain the following information.

  • Your full name.
  • Address where you live.
  • Address where you would like the ballot to be mailed (if different).
  • Reason for voting absentee.
  • Your political party preference if you are applying for an August Primary ballot.
  • The signatures of everyone requesting a ballot.

If you are voting absentee, your notarized* affidavit envelope with your voted ballot inside, must be returned to the County Clerk no later than 7:00 p.m. the day of election. The Election Authority may only accept absentee ballots delivered by mail, registered carrier, or personally returned by the voter.

* The affidavit envelope does not have to be notarized for anyone requesting an absentee ballot because of illness or physical disability.

May I vote an absentee ballot in person?

You may vote an absentee ballot at the County Clerk’s Office. Such voting   begins six weeks before an election and continues until 5:00 p.m. the day before election.

May I have an absentee ballot sent to a relative?

Yes. Applications for absentee ballots may be made for the applicant, in person, by his or her guardian or a relative within the second degree.

What are the election office hours?
